Kate Strein, an eighth grade English Language Arts teacher at Jupiter Middle School, recently received a Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program grant, allowing her to travel abroad through the Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program in 2019 and 2020.

Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected based on academic and professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential.

“It's such an honor to be chosen as a Fulbright fellow and one of the proudest moments of my life,” Strein said. “This experience will help me to grow as a globally competent teacher and definitely equip me with more knowledge and skills to better prepare my students to be globally competent.”

With more than a decade as a teacher, Strein was already using innovative teaching techniques in her classroom. She prides herself on creating an engaging environment in which her students work cooperatively, a structure that makes for memorable educational experiences that inspire students to think about how they can make a difference globally.

“The lessons and units I've designed while in the program are engaging and meaningful to students,” Strein said. “They are learning how to understand different perspectives, investigate real-world issues, and how they can take action to make the world a better place.”

When she decided to deepen her knowledge and proficiency to become a better teacher in terms of global competency, she applied for the Fulbright program and was selected for the award on her first application attempt.

“I've always had a passion for understanding other cultures, traveling, and humanitarian work, but this program put all those passions together and showed me how to integrate them into my classroom in meaningful ways,” she said.

Strein is looking forward to an international field experience in 2020 where she will work with teachers in Peru. After she completes the program, she plans to pursue a doctorate in global education or seek another position within the Fulbright program.

“My passion for teaching and mentoring is something that past students remember and thank me for,” Strein said. “With this newly awakened passion of global competence in my teaching, my goal is for students to leave my class as better citizens who have empathy towards others, understanding and acceptance of different cultures and perspectives, as well as a desire to take part in social peace and justice.”

Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms is a year-long professional development opportunity for U.S. elementary, middle, and high school teachers to develop skills for preparing students for a competitive global economy.
