PreK Substitutes Needed

The VPK Substitute Pool is a unique subset of the School District Substitute Pool. Professional Development may be included for these positions. Please view the PreK Substitute Flyer for more information. 


Hiring Requirements

*Workshop exemptions (proof required):

If within the past five (5) years:

  • You have been an SDPBC substitute teacher, or
  • You held a valid substitute certificate from another county, or
  • You have been a student teacher (or are entering your student teaching), or
  • You have been an active, certified classroom teacher, or 
  • You retired from a K-12 classroom teaching position.

Application and Document Submission

Candidates interested in becoming a Substitute Teacher should gather all requested documents, prior to submitting the online application.

Step 1
Request your official transcript reflecting the completion of at least 30 semester hours from your college/university.

Step 2
Obtain a Substitute certificate, by completing the How to Be a Better Substitute Teacher Workshop*  
(*If you meet one of the above exemption criteria, you will not be required to complete the workshop.)

Step 3
Obtain two (2) references on the Employment Reference form (PBSD 0606).  One reference from your current or most recent employer within the past five (5) years and one professional reference (no relatives).

Student teachers are required to provide three (3) references.  One reference must be from the principal/assistant principal of the school, one from the cooperating teacher, and one from the college supervisor. 

Step 4
Complete the Applicant Security Check form (PBSD 1665).

Step 5
After you have completed all of the above steps, complete the online application and hand-deliver the documents to the Substitute Office located at:

Upon receipt of all documentation, a Human Resource representative will review your application and determine your eligibility for employment.   If you are selected to move forward in the hiring process, you will be provided with information for Employee Orientation, Fingerprinting, and Drug Testing.

Substitute Pay Rates

  • Retired* Teachers (from any State) - $13.91 per hour
  • BA/BS Degree or Higher - $13.39 per hour
  • AA/AS Degree or 60+ Earned Credits/Hours - $11.59 per hour
  • 30-59 Earned Credits/Hours - $11.33 per hour
  • Glades Supplement - additional $3.00 per hour
